November is National Adoption Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about adoption and bringing attention to the need for adoptive families for teens currently in foster care. According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, as of September 30, 2022, nearly 109,000 children were waiting to be adopted, many of whom are at risk of aging out of foster care without finding a permanent home.
This year’s theme, “Honoring Youth: Strengthening Pathways for Lasting Bonds,” highlights the importance of relational permanency. This concept goes beyond legal adoption, emphasizing the need for long-term, supportive connections that help children maintain important relationships and cultural ties. These bonds are crucial for their overall well-being and sense of belonging.
When children and youth in care cannot return home to their parents, their caseworkers and caregivers often turn to adoption to provide them with permanency and stability. On average, these kids wait around 35 months for adoption. Many of these children are teenagers who need a family that will support them through thick and thin and help them build a network of caring individuals.
Every child deserves the love and stability of a permanent family and the support of a community that cares about their future.
