The statistics about human trafficking are shocking–and more than a little frightening. Human trafficking is a danger that exists in every city and community. And unfortunately, children and youth in foster care may be especially vulnerable.
Some estimates report that 60% of human trafficking or sex trafficking victims have histories in the child welfare system. Predators target individuals who are vulnerable, those whose connections with family and caregivers are not as strong, and those who, in their eyes, won’t be missed if they were to simply disappear.
January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and throughout the month, we will share tips, resources, and information on our social media channels. We invite you to follow us, share the information within your networks, and get involved. Here are three ways you might choose to participate and raise awareness about this important topic:
- Wear blue on Human Trafficking Awareness Day, January 11. Take a photo of yourself and post it to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with the hashtag #WearBlueDay.
- Download and read our Child Sex Trafficking tip sheet. You’ll learn more about what sex trafficking is, how youth who were adopted or who are in foster care may be vulnerable to sex trafficking, indicators that may mean your child is involved, and general information about what we all can do to fight sex trafficking and keep children and youth safe.
